It’s National Dog Week!

Captain Will Judy, a former publisher of Dog World Magazine, founded National Dog Week in 1928 to educate all dog owners in their responsibilities to their pets and to their communities

While there isn’t just one definition for “responsible dog owner” there are some rules you can live by to make sure you’re being the best pet parent you can be. Here are some of them:

  1. Spay or neuter your dog

As a pet parent, surely you know that there are too many dogs that go without loving homes. Spaying or neutering your dog will help decrease those numbers.

  1. Make sure your dog wears an ID tag

We don’t want it to happen and we try our best to prevent it, but sometimes dogs get lost. Wearing an ID tag greatly increases their chances of being returned to you.

  1. Provide training for your dog

This will not only be beneficial to you as a pet parent, but to your friends and family in the community as well. Everyone loves a well-behaved dog.

  1. Give your dog exercise

Like us, dogs need regular exercise to stay fit and healthy. It is your responsibility as a pet parent to make sure your dogs gets the daily exercise they need.

  1. Feed your dog properly

Knowing the type and amount of food that is best for your dog is important. Consult your veterinarian to ensure your dog remains on a healthy diet to avoid weight-related health issues.

  1. LOVE your dog

As your dog’s favorite person in the world, it is your responsibility to love them back and show them you care. It’s that simple.

Not a dog owner yet? You can still participate in the fun this week! Here’s how:

  1. Donate to a local shelter or rescue organization (they usually except time, money or even food!)
  2. Invite local veterinarians or groomers to speak to the community about proper care
  3. OR perhaps the best way to celebrate…. Adopt a dog!
